In my mind, I see myself as a plant whisperer that knows how to consistently keep a luscious garden. But the fact is, it’s about a 50/50 chance that I can keep all of my plants thriving. No need to worry, though, because I’m here to share my top 7 indoor plants that are virtually indestructible! Plus, keep your eyes peeled for the end where I share some extra tips I’ve found to keep any and every plant thriving!
Plant #1 – Pothos Ivy. These are so fun to have around the house! They climb and sprawl, and they’re really content to be inside. They’re basically like cats, but better than cats. Can I say that? You only need to water them when the top of the soil is dry. Use them in the bedroom, bathroom, office, kitchen – and sit them on top of a shelf or cabinet where they can really do their thing!
Plant #2 – Snake Plant (Also known as Mother in Law’s Tongue). Why this plant was dubbed either of those names is beyond me. But here’s an actual fact: I personally have one of these in my bedroom and have forgotten to water it for at least a month at a time. It never gets direct sunlight – hardly anything at all – and it still manages to thrive. And not to worry – I’m doing better now with the watering and the light! You can also easily propagate these into new plants by clipping one leaf into several sections and letting it stand in water until new root systems are formed. Once there’s a new rooted plant formed, you can plant it!
Plant #3 – Aloe Vera. What a gem of a plant. It requires almost nothing from you and has nothing but love to give back. Aloe will easily grow with the slightest watering and sun, and you can use it’s clippings to soothe burned skin, or make a face masque out of the gel in the leaves. It’s a great plant to have around the house, and is not the least bit intimidating.
Plant #4 – Philodendron. These big, happy leaves will set a great mood in any space. From what I’ve found, these plants just need a good window where they can hang out for the day. I’ve planted these in soil, and in another instance, just left the whole root system in a vase of water. Either way, they will continue to grow and multiply! Hint: if you’re like me and can forget to water your plants, the “planting them in water” thing is SUCH a handy hack!
Plant #5 – Succulents/ Cactus. While these might be the tiniest bit overused in the past few years, these desert plants are still easy to maintain and happy to look at. I think they’re perfect for an office setting or a bathroom, and add a little touch of greenery wherever you need it. You’ll only need to water them when the soil is completely dry!
Plant #6 – Fiddle Leaf Fig. I was nervous about getting one of these and then potentially making it unhappy, but to my surprise, it’s been one of the most low-maintenance and consistently happy plants. (Not to mention, I got it at Trader Joe’s for $12. $12!!!) I took it home and placed it in my office window where it gets some sun from the West later on in the day. It keeps getting taller and sprouting new leaves so I have to assume it’s pretty happy where it is!
Maybe you have some plants already that aren’t on that list – or perhaps you still think you need some more reinforcement. I have three tips for you to help your plants thrive!
This Moisture Meter. It measures the level of moisture in your soil so that you don’t over-water or under-water! It’s a great hack for those of us who aren’t soil experts – and it’s only $13.
The Planta App. You can enter details about your home and lighting, and then add in the types of plants you have. The app will let you know when to water! It has great information on plant placement and can help you not forget to feed your plant friends!
Thieves Cleaner. I use this essential oil house cleaner, but plants love it too! If you have some on hand, just spray the leaves once a week! They’ll be thanking you the way they know how!
That’s all I have for you today! Hope this inspires you to bring some plants home and take care of them well!
